A concrete-free, durable paving brick created sustainably with recycled plastic waste

An estimated 92% of Kenya’s plastic is mismanaged, resulting in 37 kilotons of pollution each year. In fact, the capital of Nairobi alone generates an average of 175,000 tons of plastic waste yearly.

NWC is helping to tackle Kenya’s refuse crisis by working in partnership with Nairobi-based social enterprise, Gjenge Makers, to recycle plastic waste into durable paving bricks.

Our bricks are concrete-free, outperforming traditional pavers in both strength and durability - offering a sustainable and long-lasting alternative to conventional materials.

Key features

  • Concrete-free, made from 100% recycled materials

  • Extremely durable, maintaining good condition for decades

  • Remains intact under extreme weather conditions; water, moisture and ultraviolet radiation resistant

  • Twice as strong as concrete; expected to carry loads up to 140 N/mm or 115 metric tonnes

  • Easy to work with; uses standard construction methods and can act as a direct substitute for conventional pavers

  • Available in a variety of colours; no painting required

  • Mould and fungus resistant

  • Price comparable with standard bricks

Composition

Our bricks are made from 100% sand (silicon dioxide) and recycled plastic material, including, but not limited to polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Through a process of heat and pressure, the pavers are formed to create a durable composite which prevents deterioration.

Plastic takes approximately 100 to 1000 years to decompose, depending on the type. For example, PVC takes more than 450 years to disintegrate, while polyethylene bags only decompose by about 0.5% in 100 years. The durability of plastic means that the useful life of our paving bricks is expected to be significantly longer than conventional pavers.
