A concrete-free, durable roof tile created sustainably with recycled plastic waste
Around 92% of Kenya's plastic waste is mismanaged, leading to 37 kilotons of pollution annually. Nairobi alone produces an average of 175,000 tons of plastic waste every year.
NWC is addressing this refuse crisis by partnering with a Nairobi-based social enterprise, Gjenge Makers, to recycle plastic waste into durable roofing tiles.
Our tiles are concrete-free and outperform traditional materials in both strength and durability, providing a sustainable and long-lasting alternative to conventional construction products.
Key features
Concrete-free, made from 100% recycled materials
Extremely durable, maintaining good condition for decades
Remains intact under extreme weather conditions; water, moisture and ultraviolet radiation resistant
Easy to work with; uses standard construction methods and can act as a direct substitute for conventional roof tiles
Available in a variety of colours; no painting required
Mould and fungus resistant
Price comparable with standard roof tiles
Composition
Our roof tiles are made entirely from sand (silicon dioxide) and recycled plastic materials, such as polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The combination of heat and pressure forms the tiles into a durable composite that resists wear and deterioration.
Plastic can take anywhere from 100 to 1,000 years to decompose, depending on the type. For example, PVC takes over 450 years to break down, while polyethylene bags only degrade by about 0.5% in 100 years. Due to the durability of plastic, the lifespan of our roof tiles is expected to far exceed that of traditional roofing materials.
